Garden plants for shade

Shade is not a problem to solve, it is a different garden to grow. Woodland plants evolved under trees, so a north-facing bed or a spot below a hedge is exactly what ferns, hostas, tiarellas and their companions are built for. Foliage does most of the work: layers of green in different shapes and textures, lit up by pale flowers in spring.

All of our shade garden plants are grown at our Yorkshire nursery and delivered garden ready, with free UK delivery on orders over £40. Improve dry shade with plenty of organic matter when planting, and water new plants through their first summer.

Common questions

What grows in full shade?
Ferns, tiarellas and many woodland natives are happy in full shade. For partial shade the choice widens to hostas, heucheras and hardy geraniums. Use the Best position filter to see what suits your spot.
What can I plant in dry shade under trees?
Dry shade is the toughest spot in any garden. Dig in plenty of organic matter, choose tough spreaders like ivy and hardy ferns, and water well in the first year while roots establish.
When should I plant shade loving plants?
Spring and autumn are ideal. Woodland plants especially like autumn planting, as the soil is still warm and winter rain settles them in.
