Dianthus Deep Red brings frilled, clove scented flowers in a rich deep red to borders, edging and patio pots.
Garden pinks are one of the easiest perennials to live with. The narrow blue green foliage stays through the winter, the flowers keep coming from late spring into autumn if you deadhead them, and the clove scent carries on a warm evening. The stems are short but they cut well for a small vase.
They arrive as established plants in 10.5cm root balls with a good 500ml of root, ready for a border edge, a patio pot or a window box. Give them full sun and free draining soil. They cope with dry ground and with salt wind on the coast, which makes them a sound choice for an exposed or seaside garden, but they will not sit in wet soil over winter, so drainage matters more than feeding.
Trim the mound lightly after the main flush to keep it tidy, and deadhead through the season to keep the flowers coming. Beyond that they ask for very little.
