The bedding geranium everybody knows, flowering without a break from late spring until the first frost.

You will receive either Toscana Castello Tammo or Smart Nina, whichever the nursery has at its best, and the source describes light candy pink flowers above dark green leaves. Toscana is an upright, bushy zonal geranium rather than a trailing one, so it holds its shape as the centre of a pot or a basket and stands up well in a bedding scheme.

Give it full sun and a free draining compost. Once it is established it copes with dry spells better than most summer bedding, and it stands up to wind and salt, so it works in a coastal garden as well as a town patio. Deadhead the spent heads and it keeps flowering.

It is not hardy. Frost kills it outright, so lift the plants and keep them frost free over winter, or start again with fresh plants in spring.

Supplied as three or six large plants in 1 litre pots, packed in a gift ready box from our British nursery.
