Three different hebes in one set, chosen so that the foliage colours work together in a pot or along an edge.

Variegata brings grey green leaves edged in creamy white, taking on pinkish purple tones as the season turns. New Zealand Gold has glossy leaves with bright yellow green margins for a sunnier note. Sutherlandii is the low, dense one, a mound of tiny grey green leaves that carries white flowers in summer and does the work of ground cover. Planted together they give three textures at one height.

Hebes are New Zealand shrubs that have settled into British gardens as if they were born here. The small leaved and silver leaved sorts, this one among them, are fully hardy right across the country, while it is the big glossy leaved kinds that get knocked back by a hard winter. It stands up to salt wind and exposed sites, which is why hebes are a fixture of seaside gardens, and once established it copes with a dry spell without complaint.

Give it full sun or partial shade in well drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy ground that stays wet in winter. The summer flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, and it holds its foliage through the winter so the shape stays put. Its low, spreading habit also makes it a good weed suppressing carpet at the front of a border.

Supplied in 1 litre pots, three or six plants to a set, ready to plant straight into the garden or a container. Water regularly until it is settled, then a light trim after flowering is all it asks for.
