Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern) – Hardy Fern (Set of 3 or 6)

The classic British woodland fern, forming big shuttlecock tufts of lance shaped fronds up to 1.2 metres tall.

The male fern is robust, hardy and forgiving. Its bipinnatifid fronds rise into a lush green rosette that brings a wild, natural feel to a border, and it dies back each winter before coming again in spring.

It suits informal planting, wildflower areas and underplanting in beds and borders. Give it shade, soil that holds moisture and very little else; it is as easy a fern as we sell.

• Maintenance: Low. Cut away old or tired fronds in early spring before the new ones unfurl, and mulch in spring to hold moisture in.
