Hebe 'New Zealand Gold' – Evergreen Shrub (Set of 3 or 6)

Hebe 'New Zealand Gold' is a compact evergreen shrub with glossy leaves edged in bright yellow green.

The colour is in the foliage rather than the flowers. Each small glossy leaf carries a yellow green margin, the stems are yellow too, and the contrast is bright enough to lift a green border or a dull corner of a patio through the whole year. The plant itself is neat and bushy and holds its shape without much help.

Hebes are New Zealand shrubs that have settled into British gardens as if they were born here. The small leaved and silver leaved sorts, this one among them, are fully hardy right across the country, while it is the big glossy leaved kinds that get knocked back by a hard winter. It stands up to salt wind and exposed sites, which is why hebes are a fixture of seaside gardens, and once established it copes with a dry spell without complaint.

Give it full sun or partial shade in well drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy ground that stays wet in winter. The summer flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, and it holds its foliage through the winter so the shape stays put. It keeps a tidy dome without pruning, which is half the reason gardeners plant it.
