Three evergreen plants chosen to sit in the middle of a container and give it height, shape and colour all year.
The set holds Cupressus 'Wilma', an upright golden-green conifer with lemon scented foliage; Cordyline 'Red Star', whose narrow bronze-red leaves arch out in a spiky fountain; and a variegated Hebe, neat and rounded, which carries bee-friendly flowers in summer. Between them they give you an upright, a spiky and a rounded shape in three different colours, which is what makes a pot look considered rather than crowded. Use them as the centre of a patio pot or a planter and plant something lower around the edge.
All three want full sun and a free draining compost, and all three take coastal wind and salt. They are not all equally tough in a cold winter: the Cordyline and the Cupressus are both rated for an average British winter rather than a hard one, and both want a sheltered position, so move the pots against a wall or into a porch in a cold spell and do not leave them in a frost pocket. Golden and bronze foliage scorches in cold drying wind. Never cut the Cupressus back into bare old wood, because it will not regrow from it. Supplied as three or six established plants in 13cm pots.
