Penstemon carries spires of tubular red flowers from June right through to October, one of the longest seasons of any border perennial.
The plant grows 45 to 90cm tall and 30 to 45cm wide, upright and clump forming, with narrow mid green leaves that hold on through mild winters. The flowers are held in loose spikes and keep coming as long as you keep picking them, which makes it as useful in a vase as it is in a border, a gravel garden or a patio pot.
Give it full sun and free draining soil. Penstemons cope with drought and with exposed coastal gardens once established, but a cold wet winter on heavy ground is what kills them, so drainage matters more than shelter. Leave the old stems on over winter for protection and cut them back in spring. Plants arrive established in 1 litre root balls, ready for planting.
