A clump forming evergreen fern with crested frond tips that give it a fuller, more ornamental shape.
'Cristata' is the sought after crested form of the scaly male fern. Rich green shuttlecock fronds unfurl in spring with golden brown scales along the midribs, and the ruffled tips hold their shape right through the year.
It is robust and reliable in shade and partial shade, which makes it a good choice for a woodland garden, a north facing bed or the ground beneath established trees and shrubs. Space the plants around 60cm to 80cm apart so each one can build its natural shuttlecock.
