Hebe 'Sutherlandii' – Compact Evergreen Shrub (Set of 3 or 6)

Hebe 'Sutherlandii' is a neat, compact evergreen shrub with slender green leaves and spikes of white flowers all summer.

It builds a rounded, bushy mound of small bright green leaves, and from June to August it is covered in short spikes of white flowers that bees and butterflies work over steadily. It is the hebe to reach for when you want ground cover, an edging along a path, or a low plant that holds its shape in a rockery or a patio pot.

Hebes are New Zealand shrubs that have settled into British gardens as if they were born here. The small leaved and silver leaved sorts, this one among them, are fully hardy right across the country, while it is the big glossy leaved kinds that get knocked back by a hard winter. It stands up to salt wind and exposed sites, which is why hebes are a fixture of seaside gardens, and once established it copes with a dry spell without complaint.

Give it full sun or partial shade in well drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy ground that stays wet in winter. The summer flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, and it holds its foliage through the winter so the shape stays put. Its low, spreading habit also makes it a good weed suppressing carpet at the front of a border.

Supplied in 1 litre pots, three or six plants to a set, ready to plant straight into the garden or a container. Water regularly until it is settled, then a light trim after flowering is all it asks for.
