Hebe 'Emerald Gem' is a dense, dome shaped evergreen shrub that holds a tidy globe of bright green foliage without pruning.

The leaves are small, bright green and packed so closely that the plant forms a natural rounded mound, roughly 30 to 40cm tall and a little wider. In summer it may produce small white flowers that bring pollinators in, but the shape and the colour of the foliage are the reason to plant it, and both are there every month of the year.

Hebes are New Zealand shrubs that have settled into British gardens as if they were born here. The small leaved and silver leaved sorts, this one among them, are fully hardy right across the country, while it is the big glossy leaved kinds that get knocked back by a hard winter. It stands up to salt wind and exposed sites, which is why hebes are a fixture of seaside gardens, and once established it copes with a dry spell without complaint.

Give it full sun or partial shade in well drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy ground that stays wet in winter. The summer flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, and it holds its foliage through the winter so the shape stays put. Its low, spreading habit also makes it a good weed suppressing carpet at the front of a border.

Supplied in a 2 litre pot, well rooted and ready to plant out or pot on, ready to plant straight into the garden or a container. Water regularly until it is settled, then a light trim after flowering is all it asks for.
