Hydrangea – Pink Flowering Shrub (2L Pot)

A pink flowered hydrangea, carrying full, rounded flower heads above broad green leaves from midsummer into autumn.

The heads open in midsummer and hold for months, deepening and fading as the season turns, and they dry to soft parchment shades that are worth leaving on the plant over winter. They cut well for the house, fresh or dried. The plant makes a mounded shrub of about one to two metres tall and a little less across.

Grow it in partial shade, where it is happiest, in soil that stays reliably moist. It will take morning sun but not a hot south facing wall. Mophead hydrangeas take their colour from the soil, going pink on alkaline ground and blue on acid, so if you want to hold the pink, grow it in ordinary or limy soil rather than ericaceous compost.

It is fully hardy, though a late frost can catch the young growth in a cold spring. Leave the old flower heads on until March, then cut back to a fat pair of buds, since this kind flowers on last year's wood. It is a traditional seaside garden shrub and stands coastal conditions well. Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot.
