Philadelphus 'Virginal' (Mock Orange) – Scented White Shrub (2L Pot)

Philadelphus 'Virginal' is the tall mock orange, hung with double white flowers in June and July that scent a whole garden with orange blossom.

The scent is the reason to grow it. On a warm evening it carries right across a lawn, and a single stem cut for a room is plenty. The flowers are pure white and fully double, held along arching branches that bend under the weight of them, against plain mid green leaves.

It is a big, quick shrub, reaching two to three metres each way, so give it room or use it as an informal flowering hedge or screen with plants set about one and a half to two metres apart. It is completely hardy, takes full sun or partial shade, stands coastal wind, and grows on nearly any soil that drains, chalk and clay included.

Prune straight after flowering, cutting the stems that have just flowered back to strong new shoots. Pruning in spring, as you would a summer flowering shrub, removes the whole of next year's display. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot.
