Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' sends up slender spikes of violet purple flowers on near black stems from early summer.
It makes an upright clump 50 to 60cm tall and 30 to 45cm wide, with grey green aromatic leaves at the base and dark stems that hold their colour long after the flowers have gone. That standing structure is why it works so well with grasses and with rounded plants such as hardy geraniums, and bees work the spikes from morning to dusk. The stems also cut well.
Give it full sun and free draining ground. Border salvias stay out all year right across Britain, including exposed and coastal gardens, but winter wet kills far more plants than cold does, so drainage is the thing to get right. It arrives well rooted in a 2 litre pot. Cut it back after the first flush and it will flower again, then cut old growth away in late autumn or early spring.
