Salvia 'East Friesland' (Woodland Sage) – Hardy Perennial (2L Pot)

Salvia nemorosa 'East Friesland' is a compact border salvia that throws up dense spikes of deep violet purple flower from midsummer into autumn.

It builds a neat, bushy clump of aromatic mid green leaves, with the flower spikes held upright above them. The colour is strong enough to read from across a garden and sits well with grasses, achillea and anything else that likes an open, sunny spot. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Give it full sun and free draining soil. Winter wet does far more harm than cold to a border salvia, so avoid heavy ground that stays sodden. It copes with dry soil once it has its roots down, takes coastal wind and salt, and is happy in a large container. The flowers are rich in nectar and the aromatic foliage means deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone.

Cut the plant back after the first flush of flower and it will usually give you a second wave later in the season. Supplied as an established plant in a 17cm 2 litre pot, ready to plant out or pot on.
