Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame' – Colour Changing Deciduous Shrub (2L Pot)

Spiraea 'Goldflame' is a small mound forming shrub whose leaves change colour through the year, from bronze red in spring to golden yellow, then soft green, then copper orange in autumn.

On top of that, flat clusters of deep rose pink flowers open at the stem tips from early to midsummer and bring in bees and butterflies. The plant stays around sixty to ninety centimetres each way, which makes it easy to place at the front of a border, along a low informal edge, or in a pot by a door.

This is the summer flowering japonica kind of spiraea: it flowers on new wood and is cut back in spring, unlike the big spring flowering types such as Arguta, which are pruned straight after they flower. Cut it back to a low framework in early spring and you get the brightest new foliage and plenty of flower.

It is one of the easiest shrubs we sell, standing cold, wind and salt air, and it grows on most soils including clay as long as they drain. Full sun gives the strongest leaf colour. Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot.
