Foam flower is one of the few perennials that genuinely performs in deep shade, grown for its patterned leaves as much as its frothy flower spikes.
'Angel Wings' makes a compact clump of deeply cut, lacy green leaves with dark central veining. In late spring and early summer, airy plumes of tiny soft pink and white flowers rise above the leaves. The markings deepen in colour as the weather cools.
It is better in low light than the heucheras it usually sits beside, and it works as ground cover under trees and shrubs, along a shaded border, or in a pot on a shady patio. Give it cool, moist, humus rich soil that never bakes dry. It is not a plant for a hot sunny front garden.
The foliage is semi-evergreen rather than reliably evergreen, so it can look tatty after a hard winter, and the marbled leaves often colour bronze and red in cold weather. Mulch with leaf mould or compost in spring, and divide every few years. Supplied as one established plant in a 2 litre pot.
