Weigela florida 'Variegata' – Variegated Pink Flowering Shrub (2L Pot)

Weigela 'Variegata' gives you two things at once: mid green leaves neatly edged in creamy white all season, and masses of pink funnel shaped flowers in May and June.

The flowers hang in clusters along arching branches and bees work them steadily while they last. Out of flower the variegated foliage carries the plant, lightening a dull corner or a dark backdrop in a way plain green never does. It makes a rounded bush of about one and a half to two metres each way, which is compact for a weigela.

It is fully hardy, easy, and grows in full sun or partial shade on most soils, including chalk and clay, as long as they are moist but drained. Variegated forms scorch in the very hottest, driest spots, so a place with some afternoon shade suits it better than a baking wall.

Prune straight after flowering, cutting the flowered shoots back to a strong pair of buds, and take the oldest stems out at the base now and then to keep it young. Pruning in spring would remove the flower buds, which form on last year's wood. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot.
