Artichoke 'Green Globe' – Hardy Perennial Vegetable (2L Pot)

Globe artichoke 'Green Globe' is a big, silver leaved perennial grown as much for its shape as for its edible buds.

The plant makes an upright clump of deeply lobed, silvery green leaves around 120 to 150cm tall and 90 to 100cm across, so it earns its place in a border as readily as in a kitchen garden. Buds are cut from June to September from the second year onwards, and any left unpicked open into enormous purple blue thistle flowers that bees work heavily. The long stems also cut well for the house.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot, ready to go straight into a border, a raised bed or a deep, well drained bed. Give it full sun and sharp drainage. It is hardy in most of Britain, but the crown can rot in a cold wet winter, so put a dry mulch over it in hard weather. Water while it settles in and feed through the growing season; once established it copes well with dry spells. Plants crop best in their second and third years and are replaced from offsets after four or five.
