Cucumber 'Tasty Green' is a vigorous, reliable variety cropping long, smooth, dark green fruit with a sweet, crisp flavour.

Fruit reaches around 25 to 30cm and is picked from July through to October. It is a Japanese bred variety well regarded for flavour and for how heavily it crops. Plants climb to one and a half to two metres given something to hold on to and spread 45 to 60cm, so give them a cane, a string or a trellis. Support is essential, and it keeps the fruit clean and straight while saving space.

A greenhouse or polytunnel is the reliable route in Britain, though it will crop outdoors in a warm, sheltered spot once all risk of frost has passed, usually from late May. It is not hardy and cold nights check it badly. Keep the roots evenly moist in a rich, free draining compost or growbag, as dry roots turn the fruit bitter, but avoid cold wet ground, which rots the plant. Feed every fortnight with a high potassium feed once the fruit begins to form and pick regularly to keep it cropping. Bitter fruit can be harmful to pets if eaten.

Supplied as one established plant in a 2L pot, ready to grow on and plant out after the last frost.
