Raspberry 'Glen Ample' – Summer Fruiting Cane (2L Pot)

'Glen Ample' is the standard summer raspberry in most British gardens: heavy cropping, spine free and reliable.

Bred at the James Hutton Institute in Scotland, it carries large, firm, bright red berries with a sweet flavour through July and August, good fresh, frozen, jammed or baked. The canes are vigorous and upright and, unusually, carry no spines, which makes picking and tying in a great deal more pleasant. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

This is a summer fruiting raspberry, and that matters, because summer and autumn types are pruned in opposite ways. 'Glen Ample' fruits on last year's canes, so the canes that have just fruited are cut right down to the ground after picking and this season's new growth is tied in for next year. Get it the wrong way round and you lose the crop.

Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil that is slightly acid to neutral, in sun or partial shade, with plenty of well-rotted organic matter worked in. Space canes 40 to 50cm apart along a post and wire support. Feed in early spring and mulch to hold moisture. Raspberries sucker freely, so expect to pull up strays. Supplied as an established plant in a 2 litre pot.
