Rhubarb 'Victoria' – Hardy Perennial Crown (2L Pot)

'Victoria' is the classic heritage rhubarb, the one most allotments have grown for generations, and it crops generously.

The stalks are thick and green with a red blush, full flavoured and ideal for pies, crumbles, jams and compotes, and the picking season runs from April into July. Once it is settled the plant is very undemanding and returns every year without attention.

Rhubarb is very hardy and needs a proper cold winter to break dormancy and crop well the following spring. Plant in sun or partial shade in rich, moist, well-drained soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost dug in, spacing plants about 90cm apart, and mulch each spring to hold moisture. Pull no stalks in the first season so the crown can build a strong root system, and take off any flower stalks that appear. It makes a big plant with huge leaves, so give it space. The leaves are poisonous and the stalks are not, so pull the stalks, cook them, and put the leaf blades on the compost heap.
