Canna Tropicanna

Canna Tropicanna, also known as Canna 'Phasion', is one of the most striking and popular canna varieties available. Prized primarily for its breathtaking foliage, the large, paddle-shaped leaves emerge in rich burgundy-purple and develop dramatic stripes of pink, red, orange and gold as they mature. Vibrant tangerine-orange flowers appear from mid-summer through to early autumn, adding an extra layer of tropical colour to borders, patio containers and exotic-style planting schemes.

Supplied in a 3 litre pot, this plant is well-established and ready to make an impact in your garden. Canna Tropicanna thrives in a warm, sheltered position in full sun and rewards generous watering and feeding throughout the growing season with lush, vigorous growth. In milder regions, mulch the crown heavily over winter; in colder areas, lift the rhizomes after the first frosts and store them in a cool, frost-free place until spring.

Cultural Information:

  • Botanical Name: Canna × generalis 'Tropicanna' (syn. 'Phasion')

  • Common Names: Canna Lily, Indian Shot Plant

  • Classification: Herbaceous Perennial (half-hardy)

  • Foliage: Bronze-Purple Leaves with Vibrant Pink, Red, Orange and Gold Stripes

  • RHS Award: Award of Garden Merit (AGM)

Planting and Aftercare:

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot in rich, moisture-retentive soil. Water regularly and feed fortnightly with a high-potash fertiliser during the growing season to encourage strong foliage and flowering. Remove spent flower stems to encourage further blooms. In autumn, once foliage has been blackened by frost, cut stems back to around 15 cm. In mild areas, apply a thick mulch of bark or straw over the crown for winter protection. In colder regions, carefully lift the rhizomes, allow them to dry, and store in barely moist compost in a cool, frost-free location until replanting the following spring.
