Cornus alba 'Sibirica' (Siberian Dogwood) – Red Winter Stems (3L Pot)

Cornus alba 'Sibirica' is the red stemmed dogwood, grown for a thicket of coral red winter stems that light up the garden when nothing else is doing anything.

Through summer it is a quiet, bushy shrub with dark green oval leaves and small clusters of creamy white flower in late spring and early summer, followed by white berries that the birds take in autumn. The leaves turn red and orange before they fall, and that is when the stems take over.

It grows to around two to three metres each way and is completely hardy, including in cold gardens and on ground that stays wet. It is a streamside plant by nature, so damp soil, heavy soil and clay suit it, and it will take full sun or partial shade. Sun gives the strongest stem colour.

The one job it needs is coppicing. Cut the stems back hard to a low stump in early spring every year or two, because the brightest bark is always the youngest. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot, ready for the border, a damp corner or a large container.
