Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' (Dogwood) – Flame Winter Stems (3L Pot)

Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' carries winter stems that run from gold at the base through orange to flame red at the tips, like embers in the border.

In the growing season it is a bushy shrub with fresh green oval leaves, clusters of small creamy white flower in late spring and early summer, and small dark berries in autumn that the birds take. The leaves turn orange and red before they fall and the stems come into their own from November until spring.

It makes about two and a half metres each way and can be held smaller by pruning. It is fully hardy, grows in full sun or partial shade, and copes with most soils including clay and ground that stays moist. Plant it where low winter light can shine through the stems and the effect doubles.

Prune differently from the other dogwoods: take about a third of the oldest stems down to the base each spring rather than cutting the whole plant off, so you keep a framework and never lose the display. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot.
