Coreopsis 'Solar Moon' (Tickseed) – Hardy Perennial (3L Pot)

Coreopsis 'Solar Moon' carries golden yellow daisy flowers from early summer into autumn on a neat mound that asks very little.

The flowers come in waves from June to September above a compact mound of mid green, lance shaped leaves about 30 to 45cm each way. Bees and butterflies work them steadily, and the stems are long enough to cut for a small vase.

Plant it in full sun in free draining ground, or in a patio container. It copes well with dry and sandy soil once established, but it rots in wet ground over winter, so drainage matters more than feeding. Deadhead through the summer to keep it flowering and cut the spent growth back in late autumn.

It sits well in a cottage or meadow style border with achillea, salvia and grasses, and it is one of the better perennials for a hot, dry corner where little else keeps flowering.

One thing worth knowing: Coreopsis grandiflora is naturally short lived and often behaves more like an annual than a long term perennial, so it is worth replacing or dividing plants every few years.
