Eucalyptus gunnii, the cider gum, is a fast growing hardy evergreen with round blue-green juvenile leaves and a fresh aromatic scent.
The juvenile foliage is the reason to grow it: smooth, rounded leaves in blue-green to silvery blue that release a clean eucalyptus scent when brushed. Left to grow it makes a slender upright tree of 4 to 12 metres, but most gardeners cut it back hard each spring, which keeps it a bushy shrub at whatever height suits and keeps the young blue foliage coming. That makes it as useful in a mixed border or as a screen as it is as a single statement tree, and a regularly cut back plant can be kept in a large pot.
It wants full sun, or at most light shade, and a sheltered spot. Gums are shallow rooted and rock in wind until established, so plant small and stake low. It takes most soils that drain well, is drought tolerant once settled, and comes through a normal British winter, though young plants are the ones most at risk in a hard one. Small creamy white flowers appear on mature trees in summer and are visited by bees.
Supplied as an established plant in a 3 litre (19cm) nursery pot.
