Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' is the mock orange with a purple pink centre, carrying large single white flowers in June and July on a shrub small enough for an ordinary garden.

Each flower is cupped and single, with a soft purple pink flush at the base of the petals and a boss of gold stamens, and the scent of orange blossom carries a long way on a still evening. The branches arch gracefully and the plant stays around one and a quarter to one and a half metres each way, which is half the size of the old Virginal.

It is fully hardy, undemanding, and happy in full sun or partial shade on almost any soil that drains, including chalk and clay. It stands coastal wind, and it makes a good informal flowering hedge as well as a border shrub. Bees and butterflies work the open flowers.

Prune straight after flowering, taking the flowered stems back to strong new shoots. It flowers on last year's wood, so a spring prune would cut off the display. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot.
