Magnolia stellata (Star Magnolia) – Spring Flowering Shrub (3L Pot)

Magnolia stellata, the star magnolia, opens a cloud of silky white, star shaped, scented flowers on bare branches in early spring.

It is the smallest of the magnolias we sell, a multi-stemmed shrub that is happy for years in a large pot as well as in a feature bed, on a lawn or beside a path. The flowers come before the leaves, so the whole plant reads as a white silhouette in March and April; the foliage follows and drops in autumn. Across the three magnolias in this range heights run from 2.5 to 6 metres with stellata at the bottom of that.

Magnolias are hardy, but the flowers open early and a late frost or cold wind will brown them, so choose a sheltered spot in full sun or partial shade. They prefer moist, well drained soil that is neutral to slightly acid; stellata and soulangeana cope with mildly alkaline ground, but none of them like thin chalk. Give it consistent water in its first season and only light shaping after flowering; beyond that it needs very little.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3 litre pot. Outside the growing season it arrives leafless, which is normal for a deciduous tree, ready to flower as spring comes.
