Magnolia 'Susan' – Compact Spring Flowering Tree (3L Pot)

Magnolia 'Susan' carries rich purple-red, tulip shaped, scented flowers on bare branches in early spring and stays compact enough for a small garden.

The flowers come before the leaves, so the bare framework is covered in upright goblets of deep purple-red in March and April; the foliage follows and drops in autumn. It grows as an upright multi-stemmed shrub or small tree and suits a feature bed, a courtyard, a lawn or a spot beside a path. Across the three magnolias in this range heights run from 2.5 to 6 metres, with spreads of 1.5 to 5 metres.

Magnolias are hardy, but the flowers open early and a late frost or cold wind will brown them, so choose a sheltered spot in full sun or partial shade. They prefer moist, well drained soil that is neutral to slightly acid; stellata and soulangeana cope with mildly alkaline ground, but none of them like thin chalk. Give it consistent water in its first season and only light shaping after flowering; beyond that it needs very little.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3 litre pot. Outside the growing season it arrives leafless, which is normal for a deciduous tree, ready to flower as spring comes.
