Euonymus japonicus 'Microphyllus' is a dense little evergreen shrub with small glossy leaves, and the usual answer to a low formal hedge.
The leaves are dark green, oval and no bigger than a thumbnail, packed tightly onto a naturally neat plant. It clips into a crisp line, holds that line all winter, and is the shrub most gardeners reach for in place of box. It is naturally resistant to box blight, which is why so many gardeners have made the switch.
Plant it in full sun, partial shade or full shade. It takes most soils as long as the drainage is reasonable, chalk, clay, loam and sand included, and it stands up to exposed and seaside gardens. Once settled it is drought tolerant and needs very little water. Expect 75 to 100cm tall and 50 to 80cm wide in time.
Each plant is supplied as a well established 26cm root ball, which is our 7.5 litre size, well rooted and ready to plant straight out. For a continuous low hedge, space plants about 20 to 30cm apart, water well through the first season and trim lightly in spring or summer. Euonymus is poisonous to cats and dogs.
