Collection: Cyclamen

Cyclamen are the brightest thing you can plant for autumn and winter colour in pots, window boxes and hanging baskets. The plants here are Cyclamen persicum, the small outdoor cyclamen sold as winter bedding, in Flame, Silver Leaf, Bicolour and plain colours from white and salmon to scarlet and purple.

They are not fully hardy. In a sheltered pot, window box or basket they will take a light frost, but a hard or long frost kills them, so treat them as one season of colour from autumn through winter. A porch or a sheltered doorstep suits them best, especially the larger plants.

Give them partial shade and a spot out of cold wind, and keep them on the dry side. Water at the edge of the pot rather than into the middle of the plant, and pull off spent flowers with their stalks to keep new buds coming. The Silver Leaf types earn their place between flowers too, with marbled silver leaves.

Want cyclamen that come back every year? Cyclamen hederifolium is the small hardy garden species. It flowers in autumn and slowly spreads under trees and shrubs. When it's in stock, you'll find it on this page.

Grown peat-free in Yorkshire, in sets of 3 or 6.
