A grower's pick of culinary oregano, sent as either Small Leaf or Hot n Spicy depending on what is cropping best.

Both are bushy perennials that form neat rounded mounds of small aromatic leaves, and both earn their place in the kitchen. Small Leaf gives the classic warm Mediterranean flavour that tomato sauces, pizza and roast vegetables want; Hot n Spicy adds a lively peppery heat to the same dishes. Pink or white flowers open in summer, and oregano in flower is covered in bees.

Give it full sun and sharp drainage. Wet winter soil kills oregano far more often than cold does, so a raised bed, a gravel bed or a pot is often the best home for it. Once settled it is drought tolerant and needs almost nothing from you beyond regular trimming for the kitchen, which also keeps the plant compact. It takes a little shade, which suits the golden forms.

Supplied as three or six large plants in 1 litre root balls, grown in peat-free compost.
