A dense evergreen hedging shrub carrying clusters of sweetly scented white flowers in mid to late spring.
The glossy, dark green, leathery leaves hold all year and knit into a solid screen, which is why burkwoodii is such a common choice for a formal or informal hedge. Growth is slow to moderate, reaching around 2.5 to 3m each way if left to itself, and it takes clipping well, so it is easily held lower. It also stands alone as a specimen or fills a large container.
The spring flowers are worth planting it near a path or a doorway for, and bees work them steadily. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well drained ground, spacing hedging plants about 45 to 60cm apart, and water through the first season. Once established it is tough enough for a windy or seaside garden and asks for little beyond a light trim after flowering. Supplied as outdoor ready 1L plants in your choice of three or six.
