Emerald Cushion Blue is an alpine phlox, a dense evergreen mat smothered in lavender blue flowers through April and May.
It grows only 10 to 15cm tall but spreads to 30 to 45cm, forming a firm cushion of needle like dark green leaves that stays green all year. In spring the whole mat disappears under flower. It is at its best tumbling over a wall or the edge of a raised bed, threading through a rockery, or filling the front of a gravel border as ground cover.
Give it full sun and sharply drained, poor to moderately fertile soil; sandy or gritty ground suits it best and it copes with dry spells once established. It asks for almost nothing beyond a light trim after flowering to keep the cushion tight. Plants arrive established in 1 litre root balls, ready to plant out or pot on.
