One of the softest, most densely feathered forms of the soft shield fern, with a moss like texture.
'Plumosum Densum' is a compact selection that forms neat, arching rosettes of overlapping rich green fronds. The effect is layered and plume like, and because it is evergreen it carries that texture through winter when the border has otherwise gone quiet. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Give it a sheltered, shaded position and soil that drains freely; like all the shield ferns it dislikes waterlogged ground and equally dislikes drying out. Once established it needs nothing beyond having the tired fronds removed in spring.
