Stachys byzantina, commonly known as Lamb's Ear, is a beautifully textured hardy perennial prized for its striking silvery-grey, soft and woolly foliage. This low-growing, mat-forming plant adds a wonderful tactile element to any garden and is a popular choice for borders, edging, ground cover and sensory gardens. In summer, upright flower spikes emerge bearing small pinkish-purple blooms that are attractive to pollinators.
This set includes 3 established Stachys byzantina plants, each supplied in a 1 litre root-ball, ready to plant straight into borders, beds or containers. These are low maintenance, drought-tolerant perennials that thrive in a range of garden conditions and establish quickly once planted.
Key Features:
Set of 3 or 6 established Stachys byzantina plants
Supplied as 1 litre root-ball, garden ready
Soft, silvery-grey woolly foliage with excellent ground cover
Produces upright spikes of pinkish-purple flowers in summer
Low maintenance and drought tolerant once established
Ideal for borders, edging, ground cover, sensory gardens and containers
Attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators
Cultural Information:
Botanical Name: Stachys byzantina
Common Names: Lamb's Ear, Woolly Hedgenettle, Donkey's Ears
Classification: Hardy Herbaceous Perennial
Fully Grown Height and Spread: 30–45 cm × 30–60 cm (flower spikes may reach up to 60 cm)
Plant in a sunny to partially shaded position in well-drained soil. Stachys byzantina is highly tolerant of dry conditions once established and requires very little ongoing care. Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to encourage fresh foliage growth. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils as this can cause the woolly foliage to rot.
What's Included:
3 or 6 x Stachys byzantina plants (1 litre root-ball each)
Notes: Plants are supplied as established root-ball specimens and may vary slightly in size and shape depending on the time of year. Foliage is semi-evergreen and may die back partially in harsh winters before returning strongly in spring.
