Undivided, strap shaped fronds with glossy green faces and wavy edges, quite unlike any other fern.

Hart's tongue fern is a British native and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Where most ferns are lacy, this one is bold and simple, forming shuttlecock rosettes of solid green straps that read as architecture in a shaded bed.

It is one of the most reliable evergreens for difficult shady spots and is particularly good on chalk, since it favours neutral to alkaline soil. Plant it in moist ground that drains freely, mulch each year, and take off any tatty fronds in spring.
