Sage 'Berggarten' & 'Growers Friend' – Culinary Sage Mix (Set of 3 or 6)

A set of culinary sage combining two varieties, Salvia officinalis 'Berggarten' and Salvia officinalis 'Growers Friend'.

Between them they give velvety silver-green foliage, strong herbal scent and the flavour you want for stuffing, sage butter and slow cooking. 'Berggarten' carries the larger, rounded leaves and puts up soft violet flowers in late spring. 'Growers Friend' stays densely leafy and keeps its aromatic foliage through the year. Both make neat evergreen mounds of around 45cm to 60cm, so they suit a herb bed, a gravel bed, a border front or a decent-sized pot.

Grow them in full sun on free-draining soil. They are naturally drought tolerant once the roots are down and are among the easier herbs for a beginner, but they resent winter wet, so sharp drainage matters more than feeding. Leave the flowers on and the bees will find them. Each plant is supplied as an established 1 litre root ball grown in peat-free compost at our Yorkshire nursery. Replace the plants every three or four years, when sage naturally goes woody and less productive.
