Astilbe carries feathery plumes of red flowers over finely cut, fern like foliage in summer.
The plumes stand upright above the leaves through early to late summer, then dry to rust coloured seed heads that hold their shape well into winter. Plants reach roughly 40 to 75cm tall and 30 to 45cm across.
This is a plant for damp shade. It is unforgiving of dry soil and browns off badly in a sunny border, so give it partial or full shade and ground that stays reliably moist, or a container you can keep watered. Under trees, along a shaded border or at a pond edge it is hard to beat. Deer and rabbits usually leave it alone, and the plumes cut well fresh or dried.
Supplied as a well established 2 litre pot grown plant, ready to plant straight out.
