Jasminum nudiflorum, winter jasmine, carries bright yellow flowers on bare green stems from late winter into early spring, when almost nothing else is out.

It is a lax, arching shrub rather than a true climber, reaching around 2 to 3 metres, with green stems that stay green through winter and starry yellow flowers opening along them before the leaves. There is no scent, but the colour in the coldest weeks more than makes up for it. Tie it to a wall, fence or trellis and it will scramble upwards; leave it and it tumbles down a bank or over a low wall.

It is one of the easiest shrubs to grow. It takes full sun or partial shade, is happy on a north wall, tolerates exposed and coastal sites, and asks only for well-drained soil. Water in a prolonged dry spell and prune lightly after flowering to keep it in shape. Fully hardy across Britain. Plants may be in bud, flower or leaf depending on the season.

Supplied as one large, well-established plant in a 2 litre pot, ready for planting.
