A compact evergreen that carries soft pink flowers from late spring to midsummer over glossy dark leaves.
Escallonia 'Pink Elle' makes a naturally tidy bush of about 1m to 2m tall and 1m to 1.5m wide. Upright spikes of soft pink flowers open above small glossy dark green leaves from late spring well into midsummer, and they are full of nectar, so bees and butterflies stay with them. The foliage holds through the winter and keeps a border furnished when everything else has gone over.
It is one of the best flowering shrubs for a windy or seaside garden, taking salt and exposure that see off most things, and once established it copes with dry spells. Give it full sun: escallonia will survive in shade but it will not flower there. It is hardy in most of Britain, though frost laden winter winds can damage it in the coldest inland gardens. Its neat habit suits a low evergreen hedge, a path edge or a large patio pot. Prune lightly after flowering to keep the shape.
