Papaver Orientale 'Türkenlouis' – Hardy Oriental Poppy Perennial

Papaver orientale 'Türkenlouis' is a striking hardy oriental poppy renowned for its large, vivid scarlet-red flowers with beautifully fringed, lacinated petal edges and a dramatic dark blotch at the base of each petal. This classic cottage-garden perennial produces bold, eye-catching blooms in late spring to early summer, creating a spectacular focal point in borders and beds. After flowering, the plant enters a natural summer dormancy before re-emerging the following season.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3 litre root ball, ready for planting out in the garden.

Features:

  • Large, vivid scarlet-red blooms with distinctive fringed petal edges

  • Dark central blotch adds dramatic contrast to each flower

  • Fully hardy herbaceous perennial – comes back year after year

  • Low maintenance once established in a suitable position

  • Excellent cut flower for arrangements

  • Attractive to bees and other pollinators

Cultural Information:

  • Botanical Name: Papaver orientale 'Türkenlouis'

  • Common Names: Oriental Poppy, Türkenlouis Poppy

  • Classification: Hardy Herbaceous Perennial

  • Fully Grown Height & Spread: 60–90 cm × 45–60 cm

  • Growth Habit: Clump-Forming Herbaceous Perennial

  • Perfect For: Borders, Cottage Gardens, Cut Flower Gardens, Mixed Perennial Beds

  • Flowering Time: Late Spring to Early Summer (May–June)

  • Planting Position: Full Sun

  • Soil Requirements: Well-Drained Soil; Tolerates Most Soil Types, Dislikes Waterlogging

  • Hardiness: Fully Hardy (RHS H7)

  • Attracts: Bees & Pollinating Insects

  • Type: Hardy Herbaceous Perennial (Summer Dormant)

  • Foliage: Deeply Cut, Bristly Mid-Green Leaves

Planting Tips:

Plant in a sunny position in well-drained soil. Oriental poppies resent being waterlogged, so avoid heavy clay soils unless improved with grit or organic matter. Once established, these poppies are drought tolerant and require very little ongoing care. The foliage naturally dies back in mid-summer after flowering – this is completely normal. Companion plant with later-flowering perennials to fill the gap left during dormancy.

Please Note: This listing is for 1 x Papaver orientale 'Türkenlouis' plant supplied in a 3 litre root ball. Plant appearance may vary depending on the time of year and stage of growth. During dormancy, the plant may have minimal or no visible top growth.
