A compact photinia whose new leaves open flame red before settling to glossy dark green.
'Magical Volcano' keeps to around 80 to 100cm tall by 60 to 80cm across, which makes it far easier to place than the full sized red robin: a low hedge, the middle of a border, a patio container or a small garden all suit it. It is naturally dense and bushy, so it needs very little pruning to look well.
Fresh flushes of red growth keep coming through the growing season, from spring right through to autumn, and clusters of small creamy white flowers open in late spring. It is fully hardy and grows in most well drained soils, though late frosts and cold wind can scorch the young red leaves, so a sheltered spot keeps it looking its best. A light trim after flowering or in late summer brings on another flush. Supplied as a well rooted 3L plant.
