Physocarpus opulifolius 'Lady in Red' (Ninebark) – Red Leaf Shrub (3L Pot)

Physocarpus 'Lady in Red' is a compact ninebark with deep reddish purple leaves that open bright in spring and darken as the season goes on.

In June and July, clusters of pink tinged white flowers open along the arching stems, a good nectar source for bees and a lovely contrast against the dark leaves. Reddish seed heads follow and hold into autumn, and the peeling bark on older stems gives the bare plant something to show in winter.

At one and a half to two metres each way it is smaller than the older ninebarks, which makes it easier to place in a mixed border, in an informal hedge or in a large pot. It is fully hardy, copes with most soils including clay, and asks for very little once it is in the ground.

Plant it in full sun for the strongest leaf colour; in shade the red drifts towards green. An optional prune after flowering keeps it tidy and brings on fresh coloured growth. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot.
