Tradescantia 'JS Brainstorm' (Spiderwort) – Hardy Perennial (3L Pot)

The hardy spiderwort carries deep violet purple three petalled flowers over grassy foliage from early summer right through to autumn.

Each flower lasts a single day, but they open in such quick succession that the display looks continuous. 'JS Brainstorm' forms an upright clump around 40 to 50cm each way, with narrow strap shaped green leaves that make a useful contrast to broader leaved neighbours.

Plant it in sun or partial shade in soil that stays reasonably moist and has some organic matter in it. It is not a plant for dry ground, and it suits a waterside or a damp border, though it will rot if it sits permanently waterlogged. It also grows well in a large container. Bees work the flowers all season.

Cut it back hard after the first flush and it will produce fresh foliage and more flower. It dies back to the ground each winter and reappears reliably in spring. Divide every few years. Supplied as one plant in a 19cm 3 litre pot.
