Delivery detailsLupins are a classic cottage garden perennial, with tall, densely packed flower spikes in a mix of colours every summer. This collection brings you 12 Lupinus polyphyllus hybrid plants, each growing in its own 9cm pot, ready to grow on or plant straight into your borders.
Lupins are clump-forming perennials with bold, hand-shaped green leaves, and they return year after year. They suit informal cottage borders and more structured planting schemes, and the flower spikes make excellent cut flowers. The exact colours within the mix will vary, giving a varied and complementary display across the flowering season.
The plants arrive well rooted and ready to be potted on or planted into their final position. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Lupins are hardy and stay outside all year, but they dislike heavy soil that sits wet through winter. They also grow well in a large patio container.
Deadhead spent spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of flowers, and cut back the foliage in autumn once it has died back. A mulch around the base in late autumn helps protect the roots over winter. Lupins are short lived and usually need replacing after three or four years.
