This ready planted autumn and winter container brings instant colour to a patio, porch or doorstep, with red cyclamen and yellow pansies set against gold ivy and conifer foliage. It arrives growing in a 23cm green planter with olive embossing and a moss finish, so there is nothing to plant.

The display combines a conifer, yellow pansy (Viola x wittrockiana), gold ivy (Hedera) and red florist's cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum). The pansies and cyclamen supply the bold seasonal colour, while the conifer and ivy keep the planter looking full and leafy through the colder months. Deadhead the pansies regularly to keep them flowering.

Stand it in a bright, sheltered spot in light shade, out of cold wind and away from frost pockets. Water regularly, keeping the compost moist but never waterlogged, and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every fortnight to keep the display in good shape. It makes a practical ready-made gift for a gardener.

This is a seasonal display and is not hardy as a whole. The florist's cyclamen takes a light frost in a sheltered spot but is killed by a hard or prolonged frost, so expect one season of colour from autumn into spring. When the display is over, the ivy and conifer can be planted out in the garden. Cyclamen tubers and ivy are harmful if eaten, and ivy sap can irritate skin.
