Brussels sprouts are fully hardy and the flavour is sweeter after a frost, so the plants can stand outdoors right through winter. Plant them in full sun in fertile, well drained soil, with shelter from strong winds. Firm the soil hard around the base to stop the plants rocking, and stake taller plants on an exposed site. Water regularly in dry spells and feed every 3 to 4 weeks. Net the plants against pigeons. Sprouts are ready to pick from late autumn through winter, and they are best picked when firm.
