Delivery detailsRed Jewel is a compact red cabbage that grows firm, round, deep burgundy-red heads, ideal for growing your own in a raised bed, vegetable patch or allotment.
The heads are densely packed and hold well in the garden without splitting, and they keep well once cut. Red cabbage is delicious raw in salads, pickled, braised or cooked. Red Jewel suits growers of all experience levels and performs reliably in UK conditions.
You receive 12 young plants, growing in 2 trays of 6 cells, one plant to a cell. Plant them out in a sunny spot in firm, fertile, moist but well-drained soil, spacing them about 45-50cm apart each way and firming the soil around the base of each plant. Harden them off first if they have been kept under cover.
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in dry spells, and feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser to help the heads develop. Protect the plants with fine mesh netting against caterpillars, cabbage white butterflies and pigeons, and do not plant them where other brassicas grew recently, to reduce the risk of clubroot.
